With the new millennium, the durability of Islamic music over the centuries remains very much intact. And while the sounds of the oud and the ghaita and the darbukka drum are still the signature elements of North African music, they may be joined now by the strings of Cairo film orchestras, folk instruments from the Atlas Mountains, or electronic devices from Japan and America. This music was designed as a conduit to ecstasy. The intensity of these modern performances, with their sultry inflections of pitch and trance-inducing rhythms, honor that purpose. The musicians of Africa North are no less than technicians of ecstasy; irrespective of one's faith, a transporting experience awaits.
