Afrika Wassa, Vieux Diop's second release for Triloka Records, is a recording that captures the beauty and living heritage of Senegalese music fused with the experiences of Vieux's ten-year US residency and subsequent immersion in Western musical forms. A singer/songwriter in the West African Griot tradition, Diop offers vibrant arrangements that highlight traditional African instruments. A strikingly melodic and original album of hip-swaying, pan world and pop influences, Afrika Wassa features the Senegalese music master and a backing band that includes Celtic fiddler extraordinaire and Riverdance star Eileen Ivers, renowned multi-instrumentalist Brian Keane (Bobby McFerrin, Larry Coryell, and Paco de Lucia) and Paul Simon Graceland band members: the outstanding South African baseman Bakithi Kumalo and acoustic guitar virtuoso Tony Cedras.
