Description:

Peter Michael Hamel's music flows from the grace and wisdom of countless cultures. In the 1970s, the German composer and writer went beyond the ideals of the experimental avant–garde to search for a more meaningful form of expression. As he explained in his influential book, Through Music to the Self, It is the responsibility of spiritual music to learn from all musical traditions, to track down long–forgotten sources and to bring back into the limelight the original function of music - its links with the deepest in human experience.' He does just that on Colours of Time and Bardo. These two albums from the early 1980s are available in the Celestial Harmonies duobox collection. The duobox is an innovative packaging format for double compact disks that places two CDs into a standard, single disk–sized jewel box by means of a modified inner compartment. Recorded in 1980, Colours of Time, is a two–part composition for keyboard that surges with Eastern inspired melodies and time–suspending patterns, reminiscent of Terry Riley. Bardo, recorded in 1981, features Hamel on the pipe organ, electric organ and synthesizers in collaboration with synthesist, Ulrich Kraus. Together, they explore the psychological contours of inner experience on two powerful compositions, Dorian Dervishes and Bardo.'

Biography:

Award–winning artist and composer, Peter Michael Hamel, has written music for stage, radio plays and silent movies, as well as orchestral pieces and an opera. In addition to receiving formal musical training in Munich, where he also studied psychology and sociology, Hamel spent time in Asia exploring the Eastern musical traditions. He has authored a book entitled Through Music to the Self which discusses the effects on the human psyche of various Far Eastern improvisational techniques, relating them to Western music's harmonic approach. Hamel's focus on the meditative and spiritual qualities of music, his interest in new improvisational techniques and his decisive talent as a musician and composer are evident in this collection of masterpieces.
