Door of Faith is Krishna Das' first recording featuring original songs, invocations and Sanskrit prayers recorded with classical western instruments such as violin, cello, piano, trumpet, organ, acoustic guitar alongside traditional Indian instruments such as the esraj and harmonium. Produced by Rick Rubin (who also handled production duties on Krishna Das' last recording, the acclaimed Breath of the Heart), Door of Faith is an intimate soul portrait of a man connected with his inner spirit. It is transforming in its depth of devotion. Krishna Das' past four records formed a foundation that prepared him and his audience for this transcendent recording. While the call and response participation of the audience lent itself to the live emotion of the classic Kirtan setting, the Door Of Faith sessions were recorded in the utmost intimacy in Rick Rubin's home enabling Krishna Das to create a personal space where he could forget about the recording process and connect with his personal God. In the end Door of Faith is not only Krishna Das' most personal recording to date but also a record that allows the listener into their own personal space whether practicing yoga, meditating or decompressing from the stress of the work-a-day world. Truly Door of Faith is a milestone recording that is also a panacea for our time. Door Of Faith is an enhanced CD featuring a seven minute film including a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the recording session and candid footage of Krishna Das and Ram Dass in conversation.
Krishna Das spent his early musical years leaning towards jazz, blues and rock and roll. When his spiritual path took him to India he was naturally attracted to the spiritual aspects of the Indian culture. Further travels that took him to the Far East and Africa continued to influence his musical perceptions adding new flavors and broadening his horizons. He has absorbed these influences, in particular Indian devotional music, and has translated this music for a western audience.
In 1990 Krishna Das founded Triloka Records. Early travels became the foundation for his work as a producer, musician, singer and songwriter and as head of A&R for the label, Krishna Das plays a pivotal role in establishing Trlloka Records as a vehicle to enable artists to offer their indigenous traditions to a new global audience.
When I was living in India I heard much kirtan (chanting). I found that I could listen to the singers and sense the depth of their connection with God through the purity of their devotional singing. Krishna Das is an example of someone whose heartsongs open the channels to God. - Ram Dass
