The ghazal, Kiran's specialty, is a song form that comes from the Indian subcontinent. It exists somewhere between the classical and popular tradition. Ghazals began life as poems and with the addition of music, become songs. They have unbroken 700 year tradition and that tradition is alive and well in the South Asian literary diaspora across the world. These new original poems written in Urdu and Punjabi by a variety of Indian poets, combined with Kiran's music, make an original contribution to the ghazal tradition, perhaps the first recorded ghazals to be entirely created in North America. Also featured are two recordings with fellow Juno award winner and Grammy® nominated Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster. This impressive body of work is proof positive that Kiran Ahluwalia is an artist who has transcended boundaries and become a truly global musician for the 21st century.
Born in India and raised in suburban Toronto, 2004 Juno award winner Kiran Ahluwalia is the very model of a modern bicultural citizen. Fluent in four languages and effortlessly at home in both mainstream western culture and the Punjab-Canadian world she was raised in, Kiran first came on to the music scene as an interpreter of traditional music of India and Pakistan. But soon she began creating her own musical settings for contemporary texts - introducing listeners to the marvels of ghazals.
