Metronome (gr.) = beat auge, an instrument with which the duration of a beat section is established. With the 'ics' ending it becomes an American-acccented play on words. At the same time it no less indicates control over the artistic element in our information, communication and computer age; control over access to metrics, rhythm, drive, the groove, to swing and to funk... However, what people see on the sleeve is an ancient metronome, set in an archaic surrealistic scene, with flowers and music notes... Symbol of the conventional in Schultze's music , for the sheer joy of music-making, for the soul of 'techno-pops'? The many non-programmed solos alone show that in this respect things do not necessarily have to move with technocratic smoothness. Powerful, Rhythm-Oriented Electronic Crossover Music. Kristian Schultze: Keyboards, Music-Computer-Programming, Composer, Arranger, Producer. Cybernetic Creativity. This is Kristian Schultze's second album on the Erdenklang-label for which, out of artistic considerations, he took the necessary time. In 1983 his album 'Expedition Extra' was the one with which he proved that also with the aid of a music computer tension arcs can result and individual emotions expressed and thus also esoteric music is possible to achieve without having to resort to the eternally unchanging sequence courses, with always the same phased tone surfaces. This music introduces a diverse delicate balance between musicians' pleasure and the wishes of the public, between programme structures and improvisation sections. 'After what we might refer to as a brooding phase, in which I worked on the design and on the title piece', said Schultze, 'the opportunity arose with the new 'Fairlight CMI Series III' - computer of operating 'as if on a live basis' without other musicians. Following initial experiments which already led to 'bandlike' results, I was tempted to join up musically at the point where I had stopped in 1980 after leaving the Snowball-group around Curt Cress.
