You probably know WAH! as a singer of sultry Indian chants, or as that beautiful woman who strums the guitar alongside Krishna Das. After spending a lifetime immersed in music, mostly of a divine or yogic nature, WAH! has just released her first mainstream album, Opium. Swapping Sanskrit verse for English lyrics and modern themes, the effect is, nonetheless, still meditative and otherworldly. Additional talent on this album includes Macy Gray's musicians and members of Alanis Morrisette's band, so that gives you some idea of the genre, except that WAH! injects something a little trippier to create a mellow groove that's luscious and highly addictive. (Angela Starks, NY Spirit Magazine/New York, NY 7/1/03)
The music blew me away. Creatively, you've certainly tapped into a source that brings out the essence of life, about living and being real with each other. (Cameron Steele and Lucia Monetti-Steele, KKNW Contact Radio/Seattle, WA 1/20/03)
Wah!, the yoga chant singer who performed in Little Rock in 2002, has made a bold step. Instead of love songs to the divine, she is singing velvety, rhythmic songs of love and life. Working with musicians from the bands of Macy Gray and Alanis Morrisette, Wah!'s new music is soulful in a contemporary R&B way. The new songs are steeped in personal experience and conveyed with a sultriness that her chant CDs only hint at. Her superb voice rises to the new setting with inspiring emotional directness and soulfulness. (Ellis Widner, Arkansas Democratic Gazette/Little Rock, AR 1/3/03)
Fans and people familiar with WAH!s previous CDs might be surprised by the new sound, but for people who are hearing WAH! for the first time, they can expect to be blown away. Its great music, no question about it. (Kim White, Music Design/Milwaukee, WI 4/20/02)
English lyrics and a laid-back R&B style bring WAH!'s songwriting talent to the forefront. This collection of mid-tempo songs set the perfect stage for her unique commentary on life and love. Using talent from Macy Gray's and Alanis Morrisette's bandmembers, WAH! reclaims her guitar, keyboards, and great songwriting. Herb Graham Jr produces Wah! beautifully in this feel-good CD. Modern, meditative and delicious...
