Fascinating sounds, suggestive rhythms, stunning guitar runs, improvisation and distinct melodies - 'Pioneers And Heroes' is the title of guitarist Erlend Krauser's fifth solo-album (the third for the Erdenklang Label after 'Talkin' Guitar' and 'Flight Of The Phoenix') Yet, this describes only a few of the many facets of the former guitarist of the Hamburg group Lake and the Romanian rock group Phoenix. His version of the Door's 'Riders On the Storm' became a USA success in 1994 while the album 'Flight Of The Phoenix' containing the single hit, found a place in the Billboard's New Age Charts 1994, The native Romanian, Krauser, first became aware of HipHop through his son. After listening intensively to his records, he came to consider HipHop as 'the most innovative musical style of our time'. How could HipHop inspire a well trained and educated musician like Krauser? 'The novelty lies in the phrasing, the division of syllables in words and in the unusual accentuation.' A real crack like Krauser would never let anything like that go without having translated the style on his guitar. How his runs stick precisely to the beats, can be heard on his lates album particularly in the songs 'Father (Why Don't You Talk To Me)', 'Time' and ' Crying Romanian'. 'The beats adapted to HipHop, but I don't use sampled beats, I have them played on drums'. Krauser combines the earthy element of rhythm with the spiritual element of floating keyboard sounds. In the song 'Om Ah Hum....', he sets a Tibetan meditation-mantra to choir music and even manages to keep the 'groove'; a trend which is interestingly enough happening right now also in current fields of music like Ambient, Techno-House and Trip Hop. Krauser knows a lot, because at home his favorites are Tricky, Massive Attack and Leftfield. Yet, the title of his latest CD does not reflect his own achievements or those of his role models. Instead Krauser decicates the songs to the heroes of everyday life; those people who have to fight for their daily survival, freedom, happiness and love.
