Description:

In 1930s Kentucky, the Blue Grass State, the mandolin of Bill Monroe combined forces with old-time fiddle, fingerstyle banjo, and rhythm guitar to form the Blue Grass Boys – and a new genre was born. The origins of Bluegrass are profiled here with tracks by Monroe’s boys, Larry Sparks and J D Crowe as well as a composition by Bill Monroe interpreted by the Bluegrass Album Band. In the late 1960’s the scene developed into ‘Newgrass’ or progressive bluegrass represented here by artists such as Bela Fleck. Alison Krauss and Union Station, Johnson Mountain Boys & Hazel Dickens among others highlight today’s thriving Bluegrass scene.
