Review:

'Luis Di Matteo plays and writes against that image. Like Astor Piazzolla, Dino Saluzzi, Juan José Mosalini or, not least of all, his compatriot René Marino Rivero, he is among the few musicians who have stepped up to liberate the bandoneon from traditional clichés. In his hands it becomes a concert instrument, an instrument which is not only appropriate for sophisticated chamber music but which lends such music a special character.' - Berthold Klostermann - Fono Forum

Description:

Anniversary album with two CDs and an extensive booklet. One CD (Retrospectivo) is a retrospective of his compositional work from 1976 to 2000, with characteristic examples from his repertoire. The other CD (Tango y mas allá) presents his new production.

Ever on the lookout for new timbres, in 2004 he picked up the thread of an idea which had originated during his work on the film track for 'Los Dueños del Silencio.' For that project he had incorporated electronic sounds imitating human voices into recordings of music played by conventional instruments. On the new album the electronic sounds are supplied by the synthesizer and the keyboard; the conventional ones by the cello, the transverse flute, drums and, naturally, the bandoneon. What with the vitality, creativity and South American alegria vital that inform his music and his performances, we can rest assured of a future with a great deal more of Luis Di Matteo.

Biography:

Today Luis Di Matteo is one of the last great bandoneonistas of the Rio de la Plata, in addition to being among the most interesting contemporary composers of South American origin.

On the bandoneon, Luis Di Matteo refutes the common misconception that his instrument is applicable solely to Tango.
