Description:

These live performances were recorded in Gastown, Vancouver, British Columbia in 1976, at the conclusion of a concert tour. Taken from the last two nights of a weeklong engagement, the club had by then become like an old friend, packed each night with a warm and enthusiastic audience. As much as this recording is a dialogue between five musicians, it is also a conversation with a sixth participant, the audience. This sets A Special Edition apart from the usual studio recording, where the audience is absent. For Paul Horn, the audience makes all the difference in the world to the performance...those last two nights in the club were wild.' In as much as improvisation is a key to jazz, the compositions on this recording hold a special place, particularly the free form compositions Dusk and Dawn. Horn observes, 'Improvisation tests the sensitivity, openness, empathy, rapport and extrasensory perception of each member of the group.' Improvisation pinpoints the present moment like nothing else; the only real thing is now. This extraordinary recording captures a very special moment in time, allowing us to share in the magic and warmth of those two nights in 1976 in Vancouver. As a member of the audience, we are in a unique position. Listening to this recording, we, too, become a privileged member of the group. In A Special Edition, Paul Horn shares with us a remarkable performance, recreating the magical environment and electricity of the moment on a truly memorable recording.'

Biography:

A classically trained flautist, Paul Horn played jazz with Chico Hamilton, served as a top studio musician in Los Angeles and recorded with his own quintet in the early 1960s. During that time, he won two Grammy® Awards for his Jazz Suite On The Mass Texts. Increasing dissatisfaction with the Hollywood lifestyle led Horn to India on his search for alternatives, where he studied meditation and began to explore other ways of playing his instrument. The success of his intuitive and contemplative improvisations on Inside the Taj Mahal proved that audiences were ready for a new approach and opened the door to a series of recordings inside acoustic and architectural wonders around the world, including Inside the Great Pyramid and Inside the Cathedral. Both Horn's cross–cultural collaborations and his highly refined works for more conventional Western ensembles have garnered much critical acclaim.
