I'd put this disc in a class with Byrne and Eno's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts or Paul Simon's Graceland. It's like you've got the whole universe onto one CD... you've found a way to subsume the vast ocean of North Indian devotional music into the equally vast continent of Brazilian rhythms. - Alan di Perna, Yoga Journal
Thunder Love is Uttals tenth studio album and his first major release since his Grammy-nominated 2002 record Mondo Rama. Thunder Love displays Uttals skill not only as a vocalist and interpreter of Sanskrit mantras, but also his ability as an English-speaking songwriter. Additionally the album progresses beyond the traditional structures of kirtan (call-and-response devotional chanting) and Indian music and utilizes a diverse array of musical genres. Performing on guitars, banjo, bass, dotar, harmonium, keyboards and harmonica, among other instruments, Uttal fuses elements of Americana, roots, jazz, Brazilian and electronic music to create his own unique world sound. Recorded in California, the nine-track album was written and produced by Uttal alongside his longtime collaborator Ben Leinbach. Also featured on the album is acclaimed musician and producer Bill Laswell (Iggy Pop, Herbie Hancock), who mixed the record and plays bass and percussion on two tracks. Over the course of a recording career thats spanned two decades Uttals music has become a staple in the yoga-practicing community.
