Given the frenzy and white noise that fill our everyday lives, music can direct our focus inward and provide a welcome balm for frazzled nerves. Cole and Mitchell Markus, who produced, composed or co-composed all of the music on Journey To The Heart, had just that effect in mind when they began creating the music for Yoga Journal's new video collection, Yoga Step-by-Step. But the members of M Path were after more than 'New Age' healing music. Instead they have succeeded in creating a substantial musical piece that works on multiple levels. Featuring some of the finest musicians from the world music arena - including Ali Akbar Khan disciples Steven James (sarod) and acclaimed esraj player Benji Wertheimer and the brilliant and passionate cellist Gerri Sutyak - the tracks blend Indian vocals, melodies and instrumentation with Western rhythms and accompaniment. Journey To The Heart is arranged in a particular rhythmic sequence, similar to the way a typical yoga practice might flow: There's a slow easing in, followed by a gradual buildup in pace and concluding with a quiet, restful, Savasana-like ending. So you can use this CD as an illuminating and inviting accompaniment to the physical practice of yoga, or experience it on its own unique and considerable musical terms.
M Path is the brainchild of producers Gardner Cole and Mitchell Markus. The music is a mystical blend of traditional Indian music fused with pop and funk sensibilities. Cole is a musician, songwriter and producer who has composed songs and performed with virtually everyone from Madonna to the Jacksons. Markus is the president of Karuna Music/Triloka Records and has been involved in producing world beat albums from the beginning of the format and most recently as co-producer of Tulku.
